About the research

This research project will develop recommendations for right turn on red (RTOR) operation for dual right-turn lane configurations, founded on evidence from the safety and operational performance of such intersections in the State of Illinois. These recommendations will be delivered in a final report that will provide information on the consistent design and configuration of signalized intersection approaches featuring dual right-turn lanes. This research project will answer the following questions:

  • What is the safety performance of RTOR at dual right-turn lane approaches, compared to other types of intersection treatments?
  • What are the operational impacts of RTOR options at dual right-turn lane approaches?
  • When should RTOR be allowed for dual right-turn lane configurations, and what type of configuration should be used?
