About the research

Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) is one tool that has gained prominence in the last 10 to 15 years, both nationally and in Iowa, as agencies have focused more and more on reducing impacts to the traveling public. ABC construction projects use a variety of innovative materials and methods to reduce the road closure time, sometimes to as little as 24 hours. These types of projects often come with a high premium attached though, and are not suitable for all locations and/or constraints associated with a project.

The scope of work for this project includes documenting the construction of a bridge constructed under a compressed time schedule. This documentation will utilize available resources to understand the benefits and drawbacks of utilizing compressed schedules.
