Mr. Bret Hodne serves as the transportation training specialist for the Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP). He coordinates various trainings, including Work Zone Safety and Flagger Training, Excavation Safety, the OSHA 10-Hour Construction Course, and Motor Grader Operator (MoGO) Training, among others. He also provides technical and management assistance to local agency staff.
Mr. Hodne previously served for nearly 35 years with the City of West Des Moines, starting as an equipment operator before moving into various managerial roles and ultimately retiring as the city’s public works director after being in that role for 15 years. He has also worked as a public works director of Buckeye, Arizona and Durango, Colorado. In his previous roles with the City of West Des Moines, Mr. Hodne worked with the Iowa LTAP by serving on its advisory board from 2001 to 2016, regularly presenting at the Iowa Streets and Roads Workshop and Conference, and teaching portions of several Public Employees Leadership Institute courses. He has also held several service roles with and received numerous accolades from the American Public Works Association.
