Abstract

Agencies have historically relied on surface characteristics to drive their pavement decision-making process. While these metrics are important and merit attention, they are lagging indicators. Pavements are designed to provide structural support, so efficient methods of documenting the current and future structural condition (a leading indicator) are needed. In the past few years, more than half of the state DOTs have started exploring the use of traffic speed deflection devices (TSDDs) as part of their pavement decision-making process. This panel discussion will provide a forum for sharing information and ideas from state DOT experiences and applications.

Ideas and recommendations from this session are intended to help all participants with implementation of structural response in their decision support systems and identify needs for facilitating the implementation process. Panel members will be encouraged to briefly touch on the following topics:

  • Data Verification and Quality Control
  • Metrics of Interest
  • Utilization of Structural Response in Selecting Appropriate Treatments
  • Primary Concern(s) in Implementation
