Description
This workshop will benefit state and local professionals who plan, design, inspect, and construct Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-related facilities within the public right-of-way. State and local agency staff, consultants, and contractors are encouraged to attend.
Why Attend?
- The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has produced Design Standards and Plan Preparation Requirements for Accessible Sidewalks.
- The 2011 Design Manual from the Iowa DOT is updated periodically as changes are needed, and the course covers the current standards.
- Accessibility of public rights-of-way is required by the 1990 ADA.
- Renewed focus on consistent compliance with ADA Curb Ramp Design and Work Zone Accessibility.
- Workshop will summarize the Sidewalk, Curb Ramp, and Work Zone portions of the current Iowa DOT Design Manual, and provide information about Plan Preparation Requirements. Content from the most recently published federal rule about public right-of-way accessibility guidelines is under consideration in Iowa and will not be part of this workshop. The U.S. Access Board has produced a video series on this information, which can be found on its website (www.access-board.gov).
