About the research

The objectives of this research project are as follows:

  • Collect, process, and summarize relevant information regarding the current practice of the use of integral abutments, semi-integral abutments, tied approach slabs, erosion control/water management at bridge ends, and corrosion control at bridge ends with a particular focus on techniques and strategies aimed at increasing service life. This will be achieved based on a comprehensive literature review, survey of state DOTs, and inspection of selected bridges in Iowa.
  • Develop a document describing recommended design guidelines and details for integral abutments, semi-integral abutments, tied approach slabs, erosion control at bridge ends, and corrosion control at bridge ends. This will be obtained by compiling a list of successful practices and details supported by small-scale laboratory testing and/or computer modeling as needed.
  • Evaluate the identified options and developed recommendations through monitoring the construction and performance of the bridge ends at a demonstration bridge for (at least) one year.
