Student Software Developers

InTrans is seeking Iowa State University students who are qualified student-applicants interested in software development programming.

Students with experience using Microsoft Visual Studio development tools are encouraged to apply.

Day to day programming tasks require being proficient in tools such as Visual Basic 2008, Visual C# 2008, MS-Access, and the Unified Modeling Language.

Understanding of Object Oriented Design and Programming methodologies, as well as previous experience with Geographic Information Systems is helpful.

Interest in learning about Transportation Systems, Geographic Information Systems, and Roadway Safety Data Collection and Analysis is also a plus.

Applicants must be able to work 20 hours per week during Summer and Fall Semesters, salary will be negotiated depending upon experience.

8 Student Programmers

Start date: Negotiable

Time commitment: 20 hours/week during the semester, 40 hours/week during breaks; must commit to one full year

Compensation: $11/hour

Job duties

  • Develop new computer programs from program specifications prepared by Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) information technology (IT) specialists. Analyze program specifications and develop a program to do the required work. Test and debug the program. Review the test results with an Iowa DOT IT specialist.
  • Maintain existing programs from specifications prepared by IT specialists. Analyze program specifications and determine how to change the program to produce the desired results. Make the changes, test, and debug. Review output with IT specialists before returning the program to a production environment.
  • Prepare test data for testing the logic paths for new or changed programs. Review test results with an IT specialist.
  • Prepare program documentation consisting of an abstract of the program, operation instructions, the program compiler listing, and sample input and output data, and job control statements for operations staff.
  • Complete tasks/projects in a timely manner, without prompting. Create professional, thorough, error-free work. Continuously review own work to ensure quality and achieve Iowa DOT supervisor’s expectations. Complete work according to rules, laws, procedures, programming standards, etc. applicable to the job.
  • Communicate effectively and interact in a professional manner with the highway support team and its superiors.

Educational requirements

Undergraduate or graduate students in MIS, computer science, computer engineering, or related field.

Required qualifications

Knowledge and programmer experience in VB.NET and/or Java for J2EE implementation for client/server applications and web development. Must have the ability to analyze complex logic problems. Must be able to communicate effectively with Iowa DOT Information Technology specialists.

Preferred qualifications

Knowledge and understanding of Structured Query Language, PL/SQL, Data Structures, Object Oriented development, and XML. Knowledge and experience in using the Oracle Developer Tool suite (JDeveloper, Reports Developer, Forms Developer). Knowledge and understanding of Java and Javascript.

Special conditions

The Institute for Transportation (InTrans) is Iowa State University’s focal point for transportation-related research, education, and outreach. Student programmers will be InTrans/ISU employees, but they will work at the Iowa DOT main complex at 800 Lincoln Way in Ames and be directly supervised by Iowa DOT employees.

Students selected for employment will be asked to give their consent for an electronic background check to be completed by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services.
