About the summit
The purpose of Preparing Tomorrow’s Transportation Workforce: A Midwest Summit was to assess the educational and training needs of the future transportation workforce and identify strategies to address those needs across various career paths. Hosted by the Midwest Transportation Consortium and the Institute for Transportation, the event was one of several Regional Transportation Workforce Development Summits held across the U.S. Sponsors include the U.S. DOT Research and Innovative Technology Administration's (RITA) University Transportation Centers program and the Federal Highway Administration.
Who should attend?
The summit is geared toward
- College- and university-level engineering educators
- K-12 educators and career counselors
- Adult and continuing education personnel
- Workforce development personnel
- Human resources workers for transportation agencies and contractors
- Transportation professionals and those who hire or train transportation professionals
Outcomes and topics
Participants will explore avenues for developing a diverse and effective transportation work force in a way that encompasses various elements of the workforce pipeline and career progression. Outcomes will include
- Identifying needs, opportunities, challenges, and examples of best practices for attracting, educating, training, and retaining a diverse and effective workforce (horizon: 2030 to 2050)
- Addressing multiple aspects of education, such as the K-12 curriculum, vocational training, community college and university education, and continuing education.
The event has tentatively been divided into two tracks:
- Preparing the K-12 Education Pipeline (topics include Go! magazine, marketing to kids, recruiting underrepresented groups, career guidance, core curriculum/units)
- Enhancing Higher Education and Professional Practice (topics include reaching out to underrepresented groups, career guidance, training the existing workforce, college curriculum changes, and others)

Cost and registration
Registration is $75 per person through the date of the event. Event registration includes box lunches for April 27 and 28.
Cancellations, refunds, substitutions
Registrants canceling before April 16 will be refunded the cost of registration less a $25 processing charge. No refunds will be made after April 16.
Substitutions (i.e., changing the registrant listed in the registration record) may be made at any time.
Location
The summit sessions will be held at The Hotel at Gateway Center in Ames. Ames is approximately 40 miles north of the Des Moines International Airport. Interstate 35 connects the two cities.
Lodging
Blocks of rooms are available at The Hotel at Gateway Center (800-367-2637) for April 27-28. Rates start at $89 for a double room, single occupancy. Government rate is $70 with government ID at check-in. To guarantee special rates, call by April 16 and mention the ISU Institute for Transportation.
