The Iowa Department of Transportation and the Institute for Transportation at Iowa State University are pleased to host this event for professionals and practitioners with a stake in transportation safety. The workshop will provide a forum to discuss concerns and opportunities related to human factors and roadway safety. Participants will build on the outcomes of a similar event in 2005. About the workshop
The objectives of the 2009 human factors workshop include
- reviewing research accomplishments since the 2005 workshop
- highlighting and discussing key human factors considerations
- identifying research needs at the national, regional, and local levels
- recognizing the changing safety culture and how human factors are involved
- supporting informed, data-driven decision making
- identifying information needs, existing data, and data gaps
- identifying resources and funding opportunities
- fostering knowledge transfer and retention
Tentative workshop agenda

8:00 Opening session and welcome / keynote speaker / charge to the group
9:15 Breakout sessions, six focus groups of up to 20 people; focus group topics may include
- older drivers
- young drivers; graduated driver's licenses
- judgment and decision making; impaired driving
- multi-tasking and distractions
- intelligent systems and vehicle interactions
- technology and policy issues
10:15 Break

- The Hotel at Gateway Center (800-367-2637). Blocks of rooms are available at special workshop rates. Rates start at $84 for a double room, single occupancy. Government employees' rate is $70 with government ID at check-in. To guarantee special rates, call by October 15 and mention the ISU Institute for Transportation.
